Weldin Yanes could easily be called the fastest man of Redmond High. Weldin has ran varsity track for the last three years and he posted the fastest 100, 200 and 400 meter times out of Redmond runners for the 2009 season. Despite his impressive 11.27 time in the 100, he only placed 7th at districts last year. However, the Central Valley Conference is one of the most competitive leagues for the men's 100 meters in 6A; five boys hit the qualifying mark for the state meet.
This year Yanes is coming into the track season ranked 2nd in our league for the 100, setting himself up to qualify for the state meet at Hayward Field. Last season, Weldin ran the first leg of the 4 by 400 relay team that qualified for state by placing second in the district race. Everyone who saw that race will forever remember the determination and passion in the way Weldin started off that relay. He ran an amazing 51.8 second split time to get us out for a good chance at placing in order to qualify for state. After that race, team mates raised Weldin on their shoulders, celebrating his unbelievable effort and role in getting his relay team to state.
This year, he plans on busting his butt off in attempts to break the school's record in the 100 to be claimed the fastest man to ever go to Redmond High. He was also chosen as one of the team captains for this year as well. Along with running track, Weldin maintains a 3.93 GPA and is involved with the Oregon Leadership Association, a mentoring group to Hispanic middle school students. Next year he plans on attending and running track for George Fox.
